Air Resource Advisors
Air Resource Advisors (ARAs) are technical specialists who provide expertise on air quality issues to wildfire incident management teams. They serve as the liaison between incident managers and air quality agencies.
ARAs monitor smoke impacts, forecast air quality conditions, coordinate with public health and air quality officials, and develop strategies that protect firefighter and public health while supporting fire management objectives.
The cadre of Air Resource Advisors includes specialists from federal, state, Tribal, and local governments, as well as the private sector.

About IWFAQRP
The Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program (IWFAQRP) is a collaborative effort among federal, state, tribal, and local agencies to address air quality issues related to wildland fires. Led by the US Forest Service, with direct involvement from the Wildland Fire Service (WFS). The program supports incidents nationwide through its core components: Air Resource Advisors (ARAs), air quality monitoring, smoke modeling and forecasting, and coordination with federal, state, Tribal, and local partners.
Air Resource Advisors are deployed to wildfire incidents to assess current and forecasted smoke conditions, communicate health risks, and provide science-based support to incident management teams and affected communities.
IWFAQRP maintains a National Monitoring Cache of portable PM2.5, carbon monoxide, and Rad-57 monitors and sensors that can be deployed to incidents. Monitoring data are publicly available through EPA AirNow, the Fire and Smoke Map, and the Forest Service’s AirFire tools.
The USFS Pacific Northwest Research Station’s AirFire Team develops tools that support operational decision-making and smoke forecasting, including customized forecasts using the BlueSky Smoke Modeling system, which combines active fire data with NOAA’s high-resolution meteorological data to predict smoke impacts across the contiguous United States and Alaska.
IWFAQRP is built on strong interagency collaboration. Key program capabilities—including smoke monitoring, modeling, forecasting, and public information tools—are supported through partnerships with organizations such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), NOAA, and the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station.
